DVD Burn Speed Question
Oddly, if you live in Europe, you may have better luck getting full speed out of the drive. Hopefully a future firmware update will fix it, but until then, consider it a 2x DVD burner. It seems to burn CDs at its rated speed without problems (but it's rated speed is a pokey 24x though).

In the Write window there's something like "Speed Test". Try run that even though it's not testing burn speed? With Nero Express 5.5, the Speed Test is a seperate menu item in the Nero Tooklit. This is the code in the ATIP that explicitly says the max write speed, which is rarely used on CD-R discs. All of the discs do have a manufacturer code in the ATIP, and this is what systems like Lite-On's SMART-Burn use to determine the maximum safe writing speed based on a lookup table in the drive's firmware.

Your Sony's slowest burn speed is 4x on either cd-r or cd-rw. You can't burn slower than 4x. (But this doesn't explain why the "Write speed" is greyed out. Can you update the IDE controller chip? Again, it's an Intel 83271SB. I've come to think Acer's support of it's customers is pretty poor. I feel I'm getting the run around. On write, if the write speed spikes up and then goes down to a steady rate after a long time, it's probably write-back. If the write speed remains constant from start
