When Nero is burning, it doesn't update the speed indication if it changes during the burn. I have attached a little registry hack which will cause Nero to show its burn speed dynamically. I have a new firmware update for the WD HDD but have not yet used it. I haven't seen a firmware upgrade on the NEC site or Dell for the burner, but there is one available through cd-freaks What I did notice was that if I cut the burn speed back to 6x it burned quicker (12 to 15 min) which seems to be around 4x.
